Hue, August 26, 2014

From August 23 to 25, 2014, the Kim Long Charity Clinic organized a workshop and training on comprehensive care skills for 33 PLHIV from two Self-Help Groups: Love Club and Faith Group. The Love Club, which includes 16 members, is from Quang Tri Province. The other 17 participants, who are from Hue, belong to the Faith Group.

On the first full day, Medical Doctor Nguyen Lo, Ph.D. offered training on physical care. Dr. Lo is a specialist in the HIV/AIDS Department of Hue Central Hospital. He has accompanied many PLHIV, who we call “Friends,” for a long time and has very good experience in providing healthcare and psychological treatment for PLHIV and AIDS patients. The trainees received very helpful and effective instructions for their self-care and for the care of their children and friends as well. Most of them were touched by Dr. Lo’s knowledge and the ways in which he expressed his compassion and love for our “Friends”.

 Training on Physical Care

Fr. Anthony Tuyen, a doctor of Christian Ethics, gave talk on the meaning of suffering, and he recommended that sufferers seek pastoral care. This was a session on spiritual care, which is one of the two main themes of our training: Physical care and Spiritual care for PLHIV. Many participants emphasized that providing spiritual care is a strong point of faith-based organizations that are dealing with the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Training on Spiritual Care

Our “Friends” were glad to share their experiences with HIV prevention and home care for PLHIV. They also shared their touching personal stories. Many of us shed tears. There was a lot of emotion in the room, and we felt closer in spirit and love. After the talk of Fr. Anthony, most of our “Friends” were very positive about the experience, stating: “We discussed the meaning of suffering. However, we are full of joy and happiness. Yes, we have faced much suffering and pain, but now we can overcome it thanks to this important opportunity for us to gather here during these days to learn from and share with each other.”

Learned from and Shared with each other

To close our gathering, all of the participants traveled to Quang Tri. The purpose of the trip was to visit the HIV/AIDS mission field of the Love Club in Quang Tri. In addition, through this trip, participants could build friendships and help each other improve their lives.

We are very grateful to our sponsors of this program: MISEREOR and NCA VN (Norwegian Church Aid). With MISEREOR’s grant, we were able to support two groups for their training on comprehensive care. In addition, with NCA’s support, the two groups could have time together at the clinic and Quang Tri for further sharing and relationship building.

May God continue to reward our donnors generosity with an abundance of God’s grace. We also pray for our “Friends” to have a healthy and better life.
